The truth is, many men consider having a healthy, thick, and full head of hair as a sign of machismo! Whether you are ready to start taking better care for your hair or you’re someone gifted with naturally thick hair and want to keep it looking healthy as long as possible, check out ten tips that we put together that will help you maintain healthy hair so that it is always looking its best!

10 Simple Hair Care Tips For Men

Taking care of healthy hair takes some time, money, and dedication. Achieving healthy hair requires more than just shampooing and conditioning each time you shower. Healthy hair requires quality hair products, the right methods, and taking the proper precautions. By following these 10 tips, you’ll be on your way to keeping your hair healthy, shiny, and clean!

Tip #1: Choose quality shampoo

When you’re cleaning your hair, you need to have a quality shampoo. A good shampoo will be able to remove excess oils and dirt from the hair and scalp. In addition, a good shampoo will not remove the natural oils from your hair. If you notice your hair is squeaky after washing it with shampoo, it usually is a sign that the natural oils have been removed from your scalp and hair. It is best to spend a little money and purchasing a shampoo from a salon or a store that sells professional hair care products. If you want to save even more on professional shampoos, try shopping at a store that sells men’s hair care products online.

Tip #2: Be sure to condition

The purpose of hair conditioner is to moisturize your hair so it doesn’t dry out. In addition, conditioner helps keep your hair under control. For men that have slightly greasier hair than others, using conditioner on it a couple times a week can be very beneficial for those who choose to wash their hair frequently. A quality conditioner will not only moisturize and control hair, it will repair broken and damaged hair, too.

Tip #3: Avoid scalding hot showers

There’s nothing better than a hot shower. However, hot showers can actually damage our hair, scalp, and skin. Showering in hot water will also remove the natural oils from both our skin and the hair. Once these oils are removed, it will cause your scalp and skin to feel dry and itchy. Instead of using piping hot water, shower with lukewarm to warm water to ensure that the oils are not being stripped from your hair, scalp, and skin. And remember, if your hair is dried out from hot showers, use a moisturizing conditioner to repair it.

Tip #4: Avoid treatments that use chemicals

If you are someone who frequent perms or colors your hair, you are likely causing extreme damage to your hair. Treatments like perming and hair coloring contain chemicals that can rid your hair of those essential natural oils. Plus, they can also dry your hair out, and sometimes even burn it if not careful. The best way to avoid this is steering clear of over-the-counter products and go to a professional stylist to have your hair colored or permed. These stylists will have access to better quality hair products that don't have as harsh of chemicals, and they will know the proper techniques required when using specific chemical treatments.

Tip #5: Be sure to comb wet hair

After you wash and condition your hair and are finished showering, do not brush your hair while it is wet. Brushing your hair can cause damage, making it break and produce split ends. Instead of using a brush, try using a wide tooth comb to gently comb your hair. A comb is less likely to break your hair and will better protect your scalp, and having a healthy scalp is essential to having healthy hair.

Tip #6: Use pre-treatment on hair

Before you start styling your hair and getting your signature look we recommend using a pre-styling product first. Pre-styling products layer out our hair before using other products, like wax, pastes, glues, and pomade. It is best to use this treatment while your hair is still damp, shortly after you get out of the shower. Be sure not to overuse any products, asthey can actually cause your hair to look greasy. To create a more natural appearance, only a little bit of product is needed — usually about a fingertip’s worth.

Tip #7: Don’t towel dry

When we vigorously rub our heads and hair with towels we are actually causing damage to hair cuticles, or the outer layer of our hair. Instead of aggressively using a towel until your hair is dry, use the towel to gently pat-dry your hair, removing the excess water. Then allow your hair to air dry.

Tip #8: Take precautions when swimming

Swimming is a great activity to help us stay in shape. Unfortunately, it can be bad for our hair. The chlorine used in swimming pools damages our hair as we swim. The chlorine bonds with the proteins in our hair and lifts the cuticles, exposing the lower layers to the harsh pool chemicals. Swimming can cause your hair to become dry and dull looking. To help protect your hair from the chlorine condition and rinse your hair before jumping in!

Tip #9: Avoid tight hats

If you like wearing hats and baseball caps, be sure they are not too tight. Wearing tight hats can cause the hair to be pulled out by the root. If this happens too often, it can cause permanent damage.

Tip #10: Protect your hair from the sun

If you love the outdoors, be sure to protect your hair from the sun. Just as the sun can damage our skin, it can also damage your scalp and hair. To help avoid having your hair and scalp damaged by the suns rays, purchase a good hair sunscreen lotion and apply it before going outside. Or, consider wearing a hat, but be sure it isn’t too tight!
